March 2024 Art Prompt: Exploring Colour Palettes

2/25/2024

I started the year off with a daily drawing challenge, and I really enjoyed it! It helped me explore new topics for my patterns, and draw things I normally wouldn't draw. I made a point of learning new digital drawing techniques, re-learned procreate, tried new workflows and even explored the Photoshop pattern preview tool instead of building my patterns in illustrator (Pattern preview on photoshop is now my all time favourite thing!). I really felt good about my progress in January, and it was definitely something I needed to get the creativity flowing.

I have always loved the idea of drawing challenges and art prompts, because they get you to push your personal boundaries and can help expand your range as an artist. That's why I've decided to do another art prompt for the month of March... but this time I'm focusing on colour palettes!
Paisley and Hibiscus Pattern in 4 different colour palettes
I love exploring different colour palettes in my patterns! Sometimes choosing new colours can completely change the feel of it.
I have participated in colour prompts in the past, my favourite is hosted by Colour Collective (previously on twitter, now on Instagram!). What colour collective does is posts a new colour each Saturday, and you create a drawing with each featured colour. Then everyone shares together every Friday! If you're in to art prompts, be sure to check them out - they post a new colour every week, plus it is a great way to interact with other like minded creatives & meet new artists.
For my newest art prompt, I've created palettes with 3 colours for each prompt to use as the colour theme. This prompt gives you a new colour theme every 3 days, so you have more time to explore and play around with each palette before starting a new one. Like my previous art prompt, I generated these colour themes randomly with AI - I had no idea what I would get! There are 10 colour palettes in total to explore for March.

If you'd like to participate too, I've included the full March Hues Colour Prompt below, full with colour swatches and hex codes!

Download, print or pin it and follow along :)
I'm excited to find out where these colours will take me on my newest art prompt Journey! I'll be sharing the artworks I come up with on threads and X using the tag #MarchHuesPrompt - use this tag if you join in!

Enjoy & happy drawing! :)

New Pattern Collection: Celestial Moon Phases Pattern

2/22/2024

Today I'm sharing another one of my newest pattern collections, my celestial moon phases pattern! This illustration was another result of my January 2024 daily drawing challenge, from the prompt "mystical moons" which was day 5 of my prompt list.

I've been experimenting with digital art techniques lately, and doing a lot of my illustrations on the app Procreate. I'm loving the ease of drawing on my iPad, and that I can take it anywhere. I drew this pattern on Procreate, but then I imported it to Photoshop to turn it into a pattern, so I'm still incorporating adobe in a big way. I am preferring this workflow instead of making a pattern fully on procreate - adobe is more forgiving when placing your illustrated elements, and I find it gives you more flexibility in creating a repeating pattern.

For this pattern I really just wanted to keep it simple, but had the idea of each moon phase sitting inside a diamond frame to create a tile pattern. I added a glow around each moon, a speckled deep grey background to give the look of stars, and framed each moon in a vine and stars lattice. The result is a moon phases pattern with an ornate twist!

I love how it turned out, and enjoy it on the products I've designed so far. What do you think of this pattern?

I've added this pattern to products on Society6, Zazzle and RedBubble. I really love this pattern on home decor, it adds a touch of mystical moonlight to furniture on Society6. It is also a great bedroom print, being night time themed and giving bedding and fleece throw blankets a celestial, sleepy feel. But I also added it on tech accessories and a few apparel items. I particularly love how Apple Watch bands looked with this pattern, the lattice tile really adds a decorative feel to it.

New Pattern Collection: Moon Garden Floral

2/17/2024

I started the year off in January with a daily drawing challenge. This was a neat way to start the year, because I actually used AI to create a daily drawing list of completely new drawing prompts. It was a really fun exercise and the prompts that I ended up with had me drawing everything from penguins to vinyl records! Click here if you'd like to see and use these 31 prompts for your own daily drawing challenge. While I didn't create drawings for all 31 days, I did manage 21 of them - which was a fantastic start for me. These gave me lots of new drawings to focus on for creating patterns, and I've been working away on finalizing them.

One of my first and favourite patterns completed from my January drawing challenge was my new Moon Garden Floral Pattern! This was based on my day 3 prompt which was Botanical Dreams. When I saw this prompt, my thoughts went to night blooming flowers. When researching night flowers, I stumbled across Moon Gardens and I was immediately drawn to this concept.

A moon garden is a garden that is filled with white, silver, or reflective petal plants that are meant to look beautiful when viewed in the moonlight at night. Since we're so used to enjoying gardens during the day, a garden created to be enjoyed at night is so unique. Since the flowers and foliage would have such a magical, glowing look in the moonlight, I thought moon gardens would be the perfect floral to focus on for my Botanical Dreams prompt.
I drew flowers that can be found in a moon garden - moonflowers, angels trumpet, garden phlox and hosta leaves. The result is a white, green, yellow and pink garden scene on a dark navy blue background, with speckles of tiny flowers and blooms of larger ones.

This pattern is now available for purchase on home decor, accessories and apparel! I'm listing the places you can find it below. I am particularly partial to the collection I've designed for Zazzle, as the accessories and drinkware in this pattern feature a customizable monogram, and I have designed these so you can change the background colour of your moon garden item.
